A huge ‘statement’ building near Salford Crescent and a new food hall in Denton are the most significant development plans this week.
The first phase of a £2.5bn Salford masterplan would see a huge new building built on the land of a former industrial unit north of Strawberry Hill, close to Peel Park. It will create a new site for the University of Salford’s acoustics centre.
Over in Tameside, there is a plan to create a new food hall next to Denton’s civic square. There is also movement on a massive complex with more than 800 apartments and a 120 bed hotel in the famous Wigan Pier area. More details on the plan for Eckersley Mill have now been revealed.
Here is a breakdown of each borough’s submitted planning applications this week

New pupil referral unit for 50 children set to be built in ‘dense residential neighbourhood’
A new pupil referral unit for around 50 youngsters is set to be housed in temporary buildings on the site of a town’s former technical college.
Bury Council plans to install temporary modular buildings at a recently cleared site at Whittaker Street, Radcliffe. The temporary structures will be used for a period of four years.
The council said the new school spaces were needed after the relocation of the former Spring Lane School to the New Kershaw Centre (NKC).

Century-old town centre pub could soon become apartments
A historic pub in Rochdale that has been empty for years could be transformed into new apartments.
The Reed Hotel, which has stood in the town centre for over a century, is now boarded up and in a run-down state. But the Grade-II listed building off Hunter’s Lane could now be given a new lease of life after plans to transform it into 10 apartments have been tabled.
Brightwise Properties, who put forward the proposal, want to create eight, one-bedroom and two, two-bedroom flats across the building’s four floors.

The building that could change Salford forever
A new building in Salford could be the start of huge transformation in the city.
The first part of the £2.5bn Salford Crescent masterplan has been submitted to the council for approval, which will see a new ‘statement’ building on a former industrial unit north of Strawberry Hill, close to Peel Park.
It will create a new site for the University of Salford’s acoustics centre, whose research has benefited companies such as Dyson and the Universal Music Mastering Studios in New York.

Transformation of Wigan Pier area moves closer
More detailed plans have been submitted for the transformation of what was once the largest cotton production site in the north west into a complex with more than 800 apartments and a 120 bed hotel in the famous Wigan Pier area.
Redevelopment plans were approved for two of the three historic mills at the 57-acre Eckersley Mill complex on Swan Meadow Road in 2023.
But a reserved matters application for ‘Block A’ has now been put forward. It will be the first new-build phase – a six storey apartment block built in an L-shaped plan accommodating 179 one and two bedroom apartments along with cycle and refuse storage at ground level.
