Basildon developments set to get off ground this year

From 12-storey tower blocks to new shopping centre health clinics, the town is set to be transformed in 2025.

Leader Gavin Callaghan is confident that the town will be transformed in a positive way.

He said: “There is so much happening across the borough in 2025 as we get regeneration underway and get to work on building the homes local people badly need.

“People say nothing ever happens in Basildon but by the end of 2025 no one will be saying that for a generation.” CGI images show a revitalised look for the Great Oaks accomodation development (Image: Donnard Homes)In October, developer Turley levelled the Broadmayne’s Great Oaks retail park to make way for 245 homes.

Plans were initially approved in 2021 with an 11-storey tower block and street-level shops expected to be built this year.

In the town centre, the redevelopment of the abandoned Moon on the Square Wetherspoon pub has been a main feature of Basildon Council’s plans for regeneration since it closed in September 2022.

Directly opposite the Moon on the Square site, Basildon’s vacant Marks and Spencer store is also set to be transformed into flats this year.

The development will see 495 homes and shops, including a B & M store, built by developers Marson Property and Basildon Estates.

Trafford House is set to grow by three storeys (Image: Google Maps)This year could finally see work begin on an ambitious project to extend Basildon’s Trafford House tower block by an additional three storeys.

Initial plans were granted in 2021 but despite delays work is due to start soon.

Residents will also notice changes at the Eastgate, with developments taking place at the shopping and business centres.

Initial plans hoped to develop 86 flats and included the construction of an additional six storeys. The revised works are set to begin in 2025.

The Eastgate Shopping Centre will see a new health centre open this year.

An empty unit, once containing the town’s Debenham’s store, will house a new “mini hospital”.
