Basingstoke ice rink refurbishment gaining momentum

Planet Ice has confirmed that it resumed work on the ice rink with structural engineers conducting surveys to assess the necessary repairs.

These surveys are expected to be completed by the end of January and will provide clarity on the project’s structural requirements.

In addition to the structural assessments, significant non-structural work has already begun.

This includes the removal of lighting and sound systems, barrier boards with 120 pieces of glass, thermal sheets from the ceiling, and the inspection of the metal framework, which will require treatment and repainting.

A drainage survey has also been completed, and a 3D scan of the building has been carried out to produce detailed floor plans.

Planet Ice has also confirmed that they are meeting with designers to finalise the interior design specifications for key areas of the rink, including the reception, toilets, changing rooms, and the skate hire section.

Plumbing contractors will conduct a survey of the rink’s pipework and heating system during the week of January 13.

The Basingstoke ice rink, located on Leisure Park Road, has been a key venue for local skaters and ice hockey enthusiasts and the home base for the Basingstoke Bison hockey team.

The rink was closed in November 2023 for urgent refurbishment after years of concerns about its maintenance.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council secured a 15-year lease agreement for the ice rink in December 2024, which guaranteed the future of the rink for at least another decade and a half.
