What is News at Seven?
The new BBC Scotland programme will replace The Nine, the cancellation of which was approved in October.
The half hour programme will air at 7pm every weeknight on BBC Scotland, and will be a ‘complement’ to Reporting Scotland, the flagship news show on BBC One Scotland.
BBC Scotland said News at Seven would have a conversational and informal tone and bring stories from communities across the country.
Who will present it?
It will be presented by Laura Maciver and Amy Irons.
Ms Irons hosted BBC One Scotland’s Hogmanay, taking over from Edith Bowman who took over from Jackie Bird.
She has also served as the stand-in host for Sportscene, and is the daughter of former Dunfermline, Ayr United and Partick Thistle midfielder Davie Irons.
Ms MacIver was the main presenter of The Nine from 2021 until 2024 and has been a stand-in presenter on Reporting Scotland.
Ms Maciver said: “I’m looking forward to sharing the stories that our news teams will be bringing from communities across Scotland.”
“We’ll be spending time talking to people at the heart of the news in their area and bringing different stories, faces and voices to the programme.”
Ms Irons said: “It’s great to be joining the presenting line-up and team of this new programme.
“I’m really excited to be seeing out 2024 with the Hogmanay show and starting 2025 with News at Seven.”
What happened to The Nine?
Launched in February 2019 with the launch of BBC Scotland, the hour-long programme did not fare well in the ratings.
Viewership went down every year since 2020, with a three-minute consecutive weekly reach of 156,000 people in 2020/21 to 101,000 in 2023.
It was reported in January 2024 that one episode of The Nine was watched by 1,700 people, and the day before its scrapping was announced the following month it drew 6,000.
BBC Scotland director Steve Carson said that quoting figures in isolation did not represent the actual performance of the programmes.
In August Ofcom approved the decision to reduce the BBC Scotland news output from an hour to half an hour, and the last episode of The Nine was broadcast in December last year.
Where can I watch News at Seven?
It will be broadcast on BBC Scotland from Monday January 6. The channel is number 9 on Freeview (108 in HD), 115 on Sky, 106 on Freesat, and 108 on Virgin Media.
