Body found on side of M1 leaves road closed as police investigate mystery death

Parts of the M1 remain closed for a second day after a body was found on the side of the motorway on Monday, with police launching a probe into a man’s mysterious death.

The man’s death is reportedly being treated as “unexplained” as Hertfordshire Police continue to investigate.

As of Tuesday morning, one of three northbound lanes closed between junctions five and six still cannot be accessed.

Hertfordshire Police said in a statement: “We were contacted after the body of a man was found in undergrowth at the side of the motorway between junctions five and six.

“Officers are currently working to establish the circumstances of the man’s death, which are currently unexplained, and will remain in the area this evening and tomorrow.”

Drivers are still facing delays this morning as one lane remains closed.

Yesterday’s closures had drivers facing delays of up to 90 minutes in same cases, according to the Watford Observer.

National Highways confirmed police finished their investigation work in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

National Highways East Tweeted: “Hertfordshire Police have completed their investigation work on the M1 northbound between J4 (Elstree) and J5 (Watford) following the earlier incident.

“The carriageway has been reopened with lane 1 of (3) remaining closed at this stage at the request of crews on scene.”

Police have returned to the area today to continue their investigation into the unexplained death.

Last month, there were severe delays on the M1 on Monday morning after a horror vehicle fire in Northamptonshire.

It broke out between Junction 16 and Junction 18, with M1 in Northamptonshire closed northbound between J16 (for Northampton) and J18 (for Rugby).

Police later confirmed they were called shortly after 8am and that the incident involved a fridge trailer that caught fire, though no-one was injured.
