‘Burglary suspect’ attempts to lie low, but wasn’t low enough

A suspected burglar was found by police hiding under a bed and arrested. Video footage of the moment dogged officers get their man has been released.

The arrest was made on Wednesday night after a ‘high number’ of reports of burglaries in the Rusholme and Moss Side areas of Manchester, Greater Manchester Police said.

GMP said neighbourhood officers ‘stormed the property’ on Boscombe Street, Fallowfield, after ‘proactive patrols in a burglary hotspot’ area.

The footage shows officers removing bedding and lifting away the mattress. They go on to lift up the frame of the bed – and he’s caught.

The man is then shown being held to the floor and handcuffed before he’s taken away.

Police said officers on patrol spotted a man ‘acting suspiciously’ riding a bike just before 5pm. A GMP spokesperson said: “A police officer followed the man to a property on Boscombe Street whilst calling for more officers to attend.

“After gaining entry to the address, officers suspected something was wrong when they entered one of the rooms. After lifting up the bed, they found the man hiding in the storage compartment of a bed attempting to evade police capture.”

A 41 year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary and remained in custody for questioning on Thursday evening. A second man, 36, who was also located in the property was arrested as well.

Detective Inspector Natalie McDonald said: “This is a really great example of proactive policing. We knew there was a local issue occurring over the past couple of weeks in the Rusholme and Moss Side areas, and we have placed officers on patrol in specific areas at the times we know burglaries are occurring.

“It shows that when we put officers in the right places at the right time, we see arrests of those who we believe are blighting your local areas.

“If you have any information or concerns about neighbourhood crime in your area, make sure you speak to us.”
