In November, a planning application was submitted by Ken Parke Planning Consultants on behalf of Brian Currie of Larasian Limited to renovate the Cathedral Hotel on 7-9 Milford Street.

Salisbury’s key business groups, Salisbury Chamber of Commerce and Salisbury Business Improvement District have come out in support of the proposals. The planning application has also received five letters of support from residents.

Salisbury Chamber of Commerce said: “The entire Larasian vision would attract more visitors and businesses to the city. This would help to increase local expenditure at other city centre businesses, support existing jobs, and contribute significantly to our local economy in Salisbury.”

Comments have been made in regard to the possibility that developments may break Salisbury’s 40ft rule.

In a letter seen by the Journal, Salisbury Business Improvement District (BID), the business funded not-for-profit organisation focused on benefiting Salisbury businesses, has also confirmed support for the proposals.

“The provision of the proposed Spitfire bar will be a significant draw into the city, providing a unique destination in our city, enabling Salisbury to compete with other historic destinations.

“Salisbury Business Improvement District also welcome the opportunity for local businesses to host events at the hotel, in the lobby area and club room.”

Plans include a rooftop bar (Image: Spencer Mulholland Photography) Chair of the Civic Society Stephanie Siddons Deighton said: “The Salisbury Civic Society supports the principle of regenerating the Cathedral Hotel, which will be very beneficial to the city, and it also supports the principle of the rooftop bar.

“The society has always recognised the value of the 40ft rule, now known as the Salisbury Skyline Policy, and it continues to do so.

“The policy has for many years been enormously positive in preventing challenges to views of the cathedral, but in the case of the rooftop bar, the society believes that no such challenge is involved, and the policy need not be taken as a reason for opposing a development which will add significantly to the vibrancy of the city centre.”
