Cheshire: How much are you willing to pay for policing?

Cheshire’s police and crime commissioner, PCC Dan Price, has called on the public to share their views on the police precept, which makes up part of the police budget and is set each year.

This is done to ensure the public’s voice is heard in policing matters.

The feedback from residents will be considered when setting the budget, alongside other factors.

The survey can be accessed online.

PCC Price, in his various interactions with Cheshire residents and through his citizens’ assembly, has gathered that people want more from the police service.

The demands include a more visible police presence, early crime intervention, more support services for victims, and better use of technology.

The PCC said: “I have to set a budget for the next year that gives the police the resources they need to meet your expectations to keep you safe.

“I am asking for your feedback on how much you think you should pay for your police service.

“I know the financial burdens of households who are still balancing their books due to the cost-of-living crisis and that no one wants to spend more.

“But I also need to ensure there is funding available for support and intervention services helping those who need it.”

Last year, a rise in the policing precept helped Cheshire Police maintain or improve its performance in key areas.

However, with inflation adding nearly £14million to the force’s costs, a funding gap has been created.

This has been partially closed by almost £6.3million through a rigorous review and use of reserves, but a budget shortfall still exists.

Government funding will increase, but extra funding is needed for policing.

PCCs can increase the police precept by £14 per year – £1.17 per month – for a Band D council tax property, without the need to hold a referendum.

Nearly two-thirds of Cheshire properties fall into bands A to C, meaning most households would pay less.

PCC Price said he wants to ensure Cheshire Police, a ‘high-performing force’, can continue to provide communities with the ‘service they deserve and expect’.
