A councillor’s donation has ensured that a warm space and community lunch can spread ‘much needed’ cheer.
Cllr James Mallinder, who represents Deben ward for East Suffolk Council, donated £7,500 from East Suffolk Council’s Enabling Communities Budget on a community lunch at Hollesley Village Hall earlier this week.
The lunch came in support of Meet Up Mondays and offered a warm space, a three-course meal and a chance for residents young and old to connect.

With so many struggling with financial issues, Cllr Mallinder said it was vital services like this were helped to focus on supporting communities and mental health.
“Supporting such an event is really important to me,” Cllr Mallinder said.
“Mental health is something we all need to work on, so bringing people together is a real priority along with developing a sense of community.
“Not just that, but with the cost-of-living crisis affecting so many, a warm room and hot meal can be vital to spread much needed cheer.”
The meal was followed by a raffle, with prizes for all.
The event also offered a chance for him to chat with residents about local issues and concerns.
Cllr Mallinder added: “The lunch was alive with noise of chatter as everyone met up with old friends and made new friends.
“I felt so proud to support my residents and I know they all left with full tummies and a smile. It was a really great lunch.”
The lunch was organised by Helen Lewis, who lives in the village, with support from residents.
Mrs Lewis said she was delighted to receive the support from Cllr Mallinder.
She added: “Never underestimate the importance of a hot meal and a chat with friends.
“It was a really successful event and everyone had a lovely afternoon.”
