Community/Voluntary Group of the Year: Shildon Alive

There is also a food bank, credit union, befriending service and much more run by the charity.

Shildon Alive has two community gardens where individuals can learn to grow their own food, develop gardening skills and form meaningful connections.

Their nomination said: “Through these initiatives and their focus on inclusivity,

practical help and ensuring long-term impact, Shildon Alive is making a real and tangible difference to the lives of its members while building a more resilient, supportive and sustainable community.

“Managed by the community, for the community, this initiative provides a welcoming and supportive environment that empowers individuals to grow, share skills and reach their full potential.”

Manager Paula Nelson was stunned to hear Shildon Alive announced as the winner

of the Community/Voluntary Group of the Year Award.

Stepping on stage to pick up the trophy, she said: “I really was not expecting this – I don’t know who nominated us. This is an amazing achievement.

“Thinking back to 2014 and gathering those first volunteers, seeing the passion in the town to now – it’s just amazing. Thank you everybody.

“Despite the challenges we have kept our community spirit – it’s still there. There is some real deprivation but together as a community we do amazing things.”
