A convicted rapist has today admitted a “dreadful” sex attack on a woman after entering toilets at a North Wales hospital. Lee James Mullen, of Church Street, Flint, 38, pleaded guilty to sexual assault by penetration and inflicting grievous bodily harm at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd Hospital, Bodelwyddan, on December 10.
Sentencing was adjourned at Mold Crown Court for a pre-sentence report with a risk assessment. Prosecutor David Mainstone said: “There’s the consideration whether a life sentence should be imposed.”
Mr Mainstone said he had punched the victim repeatedly and sexually assaulted her. The prosecution accepted his not guilty plea to causing GBH with intent. You can sign up for all the latest court stories here.
Mr Mainstone said the victim would wish to read an impact statement. Judge Rhys Rowlands said: “The court is going to be looking at a protective sentence in this case. A full report is needed and assessment as to dangerousness.
“This is a very serious case aggravated by the previous conviction in 2015. It must have been a dreadful experience for everybody concerned,” Judge Rowlands added.
Judge Rowlands said the charges were “very serious” particularly the sex attack count “which has to reflect the appalling violence visited upon the victim at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd”. He told Mullen: “The position is made all the more serious by your past history of offending, that matter back in 2015.
“We need to know the effect of your offending on the victim and,no doubt, her family, and the injuries she sustained. You must appreciate this is a very serious matter and can only attract a length custodial sentence in due course.”
In October 2015 the cocaine user was jailed for 11 years after he bound and gagged a woman before raping her.
