Counterfeit Scottish notes being used in Worcestershire

Officers have warned that people are using counterfeit notes to buy small items to get maximum change.

There have also been reports of people trying to exchange the fake notes for British notes.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: “We are continuing to see counterfeit Scottish notes being used around the region. As a reminder, please be mindful of people using Scottish 20’s and 50’s where they buy small items for maximum change.

“There are also reports of people trying to exchange a number of Scottish notes for British notes. They will ask you to exchange for example £300 of Scottish notes for £300 of British notes.

“There is a simple way to check the authenticity of these notes. Firstly, if there is more than one note. Check the serial numbers are not the same, or there isn’t 2 of the same number. Check that the hologram moves when the note is aimed at light. Lastly, look for any small blemishes on the surface. Tiny marks of missing ink. You can then scratch this mark with a nail or a pen lid and the ink will come off. If you look at the notes pictured. I have been able to scratch off the ink using my nail.

“If you have any concerns, please refuse the notes. If the crime is in progress please dial 999. If the offenders have left please report any incidents on 101 or online.”
