Crash on A449 Ombersley Road, Hawford: Driver in hospital

The driver, who is in his 40s, had to be cut from his car after the crash on the northbound carriageway of the A449.

He was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Emergency services were called at just before 6am on Monday (January 6) to the crash on the A449 Ombersley Road, Hawford. 

The car had left the carriageway and hit a tree and fire crews needed to free the driver from the vehicle. 

A road closure was put in place on the A449 northbound, leading to traffic chaos for commuters.

The ambulance service was the first to be called, with one vehicle being deployed at around 5.50am. 

Around 25 minutes later, an off-duty police officer spotted the crash and called the force to respond.

Officers then put a lane closure in place on the A449 northbound, which was enforced for most of the morning. 

Three Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue crews were called at 6.23am to release the man, who is in his 40s, from his vehicle using Holmatro tools.

He was then handed over to the ambulance service who treated him for potentially serious injuries before being sent to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further treatment. 

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called to reports of an RTC on the A449 Ombersley Road, Hawford, Worcester at 5.50am. 

“One ambulance responded to the scene and the driver of a car, a man, received treatment for potentially serious injuries before being conveyed to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.” 

A West Mercia Police spokesperson added: “We received a report on January 6 around 6:15am from an off-duty officer that a car had left the road and collided with a tree on the A449 between Chatley Lane to the Claines Island. “Officers arrived to manage the road closure as the driver of the vehicle sustained injuries.”

A Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Three Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crews – two from Worcester and one from Droitwich Fire Station – were called at 06:23 on  January 6 to a road traffic collision involving a small vehicle in Hawford. 

“A car had left the carriageway and was in collision with a tree. 

“A man in his 40s was extricated from his vehicle using Holmatro tools and handed over to the care of the ambulance service who attended along with police. 

“The A449 was closed northbound.”
