Darlington parent issues warning over AI chat app messages

The app – which is currently downloadable on the Google Store and has a 12+ rating – allows users to create and interact with AI characters as if they are real people.

However, one parent this week decided to warn others after spotting “red flags” with some of the messages sent from the AI characters.

Screenshots seen by The Northern Echo show the lifelike character asking the user to “promise to keep a secret” and to “not tell anyone” before sending inappropriate messages of a sexual nature.

The user of the app tells the AI chat that they are just six years old, and despite this, the chatbot continues to send disturbing messages.

One Facebook user asked parents to monitor their child’s app, branding the messages in the screenshots online as “sick”.

“My son had this, I deleted it due to similar stuff,” one person said.

The Northern Echo understands that police have been notified about the app – although the issue does not appear to be specific to Darlington.

Durham Constabulary has issued advice to parents about monitoring their child’s online activities and setting up parental controls.

A spokesman said: “We’d advise parents to have regular conversations with their children about staying safe online and encourage them to speak to you if they come across anything worrying.

“Try to monitor your child’s online activities and set up parental controls on all of your child’s devices.

“You should also activate the privacy settings on each app your child uses, and ensure that location sharing is off.”
