Darlington woman punched her victim 20 times to the head

Maria Jones became embroiled in the pub violence when her friend got into an argument with a man at the bar in Darlington’s Black Swan before her then-partner stopped other people from intervening.

The 40-year-old left her victim traumatised by the persistent and prolonged attack as she delivered a series of blows for more than a minute.

Annelise Haugstad, prosecuting, said the violence was all captured on the pub’s CCTV system and showed how Jones launched the assault on the woman.

She said: “Jones grabbed hold of the woman and immediately threw her to the floor hitting a table. Whilst on top of her Jones repeatedly punch her.

“People are attempting to intervene but the defendant is undeterred and continues her assault before leaving the pub with the woman left prone on the ground.”

The court heard how the woman suffered cuts and bruising as well as two black eyes.

In a victim impact statement, she said she was forced to take time off work due to the physical and emotional injuries she sustained.

She added: “I struggle to go to sleep because when I close my eyes, I keep having flashbacks of being on the floor thinking I was going to die.”

Jones, of The Lanes, Darlington, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm from the assault on January 28 last year.

Christopher Wood, mitigating, said his client had since broken up with her partner due to domestic violence and her situation is completely different now.

He added: “Her remorse and genuine remorse comes from the impact she has had on her victim.”
