Details announced for repair cafe and eco fair

A community repair cafe and eco fair will be held at Richmond School on Sunday, January 19.

Local volunteer repairers will be on hand to have a go at fixing a wide variety of broken items, alongside interactive displays from local environmental organisations

The event, which is free, is open from 9.45am to 12.30pm, and will be held in the Sixth Form Hall.

Items that can be brought in for repair include bicycles, electrical and electronic items, mechanical items, fabric and clothes, garden tools, jewellery and general household items.

People are also being encouraged to bring along an unwanted Christmas present and swap it for something else.

Local organisations showcasing their activities and sharing information on how to care for our local environment include Save Our Swale, Richmond Landscape Trust, Buglife, Holmdale Nature Group and staff from North Yorkshire Council’s climate change, sustainable travel and air quality teams.

Visitors will also be able to pedal their way to a healthy drink on the Smoothie Bike, discover the microbiotic world of fermenting and take part in bug-inspired stone painting.

The event has been organised by Richmondshire Climate Action Partnership.

Chair, Barbara Gravenor, said: “The repair cafe and present swap activities offer practical ways for people to save their treasured possessions from becoming landfill and will help to ensure that at least some of our many unwanted seasonal gifts will have a new lease of life.

“It is also great that local groups and council staff are putting on interactive activities to engage with and inspire visitors of all ages.”

Valerie Adams, organiser of the repair cafe, added “It’s a sad fact that some of our Christmas presents, such as children’s bikes, are not especially well made and may already not be working properly. The timing of this event is perfect for getting your gifts back to the condition the giver intended.”
