As a result, James Stevenson, 50, of Pilmuir Place, appeared at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.
He had been almost four times over the limit when police saw him getting into his car and driving.
Stevenson admitted that on December 7, in Chalmers Street, Glen Bridge and Pilmuir Street he drove having consumed excess alcohol.
The reading was 82 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the limit being 22 microgrammes.
Depute fiscal Amy Robertson said at 12.45am Stevenson was seen by police officers stumbling towards a parked vehicle in Chalmers Street.
He got into the car and started driving with police following him to Pilmuir Street.
He parked the car and was walking to his house when police approached him and could smell alcohol.
Defence solicitor Alexander Flett said, “He was on a Christmas night out and hadn’t intended to drive home.
“He got into the vehicle to charge his phone and foolishly drove home.”
Sheriff Susan Duff told Stevenson, “It was an expensive, stupid mistake.” She banned him from driving for a year and fined him £420.
