Father and son jailed for killing Brian Darby in Ingleby Barwick

Martin Breeze, 60, was today (January 13) sentenced to 32 years in prison for the murder of Mr Darby on February 9, the attempted murder of four others,  and perverting the course of justice.

His son Shaun, 30, was jailed for 16 years for manslaughter, three charges of causing grievous bodily harm without intent, and perverting the course of justice.

The sentencing at Teesside Crown Court comes almost one year after Brian Darby suffered fatal injuries in the hit-and-run attack, which took place as the 60-year-old was walking home from the pub with friends in Ingleby Barwick.

Breeze Jr was involved in an altercation with the group while he was cycling around the estate, and called his father to come and pick him up.

Breeze Sr got in his van and drove to the scene of the incident, before mounting a kerb and ploughing into the group, leaving several people with significant injuries.

Mr Darby was “pushed along the road for a considerable way” before tragically dying at the scene.

The duo abandoned the vehicle and returned home, before reporting the white van as stolen the following morning. They were arrested shortly after the 999 call.

The duo were convicted following a trial at Teesside Crown Court last summer, Breeze Jr for three counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and one of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent.

However, a subsequent appeal saw one of his grievous bodily harm charges dropped and the others changed to be wounding without intent.

More to follow.
