The Silvertown Tunnel is set to open in April this year with a host of charges for driver. The 1.4km road tunnel was created with hopes of reducing traffic and cleaning London’s air.
First proposed in 2012, with plans greenlit in 2018, it hasn’t escaped controversy. Some residents are accusing London Mayor Sadiq Khan of pricing them out of using it, with some forking out up to £10 a trip. Mr Khan funded the £2.2 billion project via a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) against future earnings with the debt being payed off by tolls.
However, for those living in a number of boroughs discounts are available under set conditions. These discounts apply to the Blackwall Tunnel too, which will no longer be free once the Silvertown Tunnel opens.
