Get involved – meeting to form Farnley Fish Pond ‘friends’ group

By Katherine Turner

With the restoration of this much-loved nature reserve now almost fully completed, plans are being drawn up to start a Friends of Farnley Fish Pond Group, with a meeting arranged for Monday, 20 January.

As reported in WLD, funds were made available to restore Farnley Fish Pond to its former glory after many years of neglect. The work was completed in November last year.

Local residents are keen to ensure that the area does not become overlooked again, and there is hope that a Friends Group could be formed to ensure the upkeep of the pond and surrounding areas.

Peter Allison, Farnley resident and previous independent and Conservative candidate, told WLD: “Being brought up in Farnley, the fish pond has always been a key part of my life from childhood into adulthood.

“Having established the Farnley & Wortley Litter Pickers group in mid-2021, the Farnley Fish Pond was always an area that needed particular attention and always needed much more than just a litter pick.

“Hearing that the fish pond was due to be dredged and cleared was welcome news and with the announcement of the plans to establish a ‘Friends of Group’ in collaboration with Leeds City Council’s Parks Department, I am keen to get involved in restoring the remainder of what is our very own local nature reserve.

“It is a real community asset and one that needs its community to support the cause. I would urge our community to attend the meeting and get involved where they can.”

The community meeting, in partnership with Leeds City Council is due to be held at Farnley Community Centre on 20 January. If you would like to attend the doors will open at 5.30 pm and the meeting will commence at 6 pm. Free tea and coffee will be available on the day.
