The incident occurred around 8.15 p.m. on Galsworthy Road in Hartlepool on Saturday, January 11.
The men knocked on the door of the man’s property before barging in and demanding money. One of the intruders was armed with a hammer.
The pair left with around £40 in cash, but fortunately the elderly man was not physically harmed.

Police are appealing for witnesses to help trace the suspects. The first male is described as white, of slim build, around 5ft 10in tall, and approximately 20 years old. He was wearing a green padded jacket, denim jeans, trainers, and a black face covering.
The second male is described as around 6ft tall, of slim build, and was wearing a black padded jacket, denim jeans, trainers, and a black face covering.
Detectives are asking anyone who witnessed the incident, saw suspicious activity in the area, or has CCTV footage to contact Cleveland Police on 101, quoting reference number 006175.
