Highland walker airlifted to safety by Coastguard’s Stornoway helicopter after incident near Achnashellach in Wester Ross; Kintail Mountain Rescue Team’s volunteers traced missing hiker after they were reported overdue

A hillwalker was airlifted to safety after getting into difficulty in the snowy mountains of Wester Ross.

The Kintail Mountain Rescue Team and a coastguard helicopter came to the rescue on Friday morning after a hillwalker was reported overdue in the Creag a Chaorainn area near Achnashellach.

The rescuers used mobile phone location technology to trace the walker, who was then airlifted to safety and rewarmed.

A spokesperson for Kintail Mountain Rescue said: “Twelve team members turned out ready for uplift onto the hill. Using Sarloc Rescue phone location technology the walker was located and then picked up by Rescue 948 in-between snow showers and rewarmed.

“Our thanks to HM Coastguard for the airlift and best wishes to the casualty, we hope you make a speedy recovery.”

Kintail Mountain Rescue Team is made up entirely of volunteers who are on call 365 days of the year, 24 hours a day to help anyone in trouble in the mountains.
