Highlands and Islands police area records crashes involving 585 drivers over a 13-month period

Police Scotland provided the data.

Around seven out of 10 drivers involved in road collisions in the Highlands and Islands during a 13-month period were male.

Data from Police Scotland, via a Freedom of Information request, showed that for this police division from September 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024 there were crashes involving 585 drivers.

Of these, 422 were male drivers, 157 were female drivers and six were classed as unknown by police.

The age group with the most collisions were drivers aged 18-24, with a total of 66 – 47 male drivers and the rest female.

The age group with the fewest were under-18s with six – 5 of them being male drivers and the other female.

The 47 males aged 18-24 was equal to 47 males aged 55-59 as the highest number for men.

The 18 females aged 18-24 was equal to 18 females aged 30-34 and 45-49 as the highest number for women.

The oldest were classed as over-80, with a total of 15, of which 11 were male drivers and the rest were female.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “All statistics are provisional and should be treated as management information.

“Please note that in a collision there could be multiple drivers/riders involved.”
