Huge 12-mile diversion as 0.1-mile stretch of A40 to be urgently closed

Motorists will face a long diversion route of around 12 miles as a small section of the A40 is closed for urgent roadworks. The closure will affect the London Road in Charlton Kings from tonight (Thursday) into Friday morning.

The closure is linked to a further collapse of a wall above the River Chelt supporting the busy A-road. Gloucestershire County Council said the works would remove a ‘dangerous’ section of leaning parapet.

The closure will run from 8pm on Thursday (January 16) through to 5am on Friday (January 17). An official diversion has been published that is suitable for all vehicles using the A-road.

There will be other shorter diversions that local drivers will be aware of. But motorists are always told that they use other diversion routes at their own risk.

The official diversion takes motorists via the A435 Cirencester Road and the A436. This is around 12 miles with the marked closed part of the road of around 0.1-miles.

This stretch of the A40 is a busy route linking Cheltenham with Oxford and ultimately London. It’s often the scene of congestion with a number of sets of traffic lights in the area.

A tweet from Gloucesterhire Highways said: “A40 London Rd Charlton Kings – urgent road closure happening on A40 London Road, 16th Jan 20:00-05:00. These works are a response to further a further collapse of the spandrel wall above the River Chelt supporting London Road. Works will remove a dangerous section of leaning parapet.”
