Humshaugh Parish set to hold neighbourhood plan referendum

On January 23, residents will decide if they want Northumberland County Council and the Northumberland National Park Authority to use this plan for future planning application decisions within the parish.

This referendum is the concluding step in the preparation of the neighbourhood plan, following a series of discussions and consultations by the parish council.

A majority vote in favour of the plan would mean that the local authorities will use it to guide their decisions on planning applications within the parish.

The referendum will be conducted in the same manner as a local election, with polling cards sent to all eligible voters.

There will also be options for postal and proxy voting for registered residents.

The polling will take place from 7am to 10pm on the referendum day, January 23.

Voters can find their designated polling station on their polling card.

Under newly introduced legislation, voters will be required to present suitable photographic identification when voting in person at the polling station.

Colin Horncastle, Northumberland County councillor, and cabinet member for looking after our environment, said: “Neighbourhood planning enables communities to play a much stronger role in shaping the areas in which they live and work and in influencing the location and design of development proposals.

“We therefore hope people will participate in this referendum and take the time to cast their vote so we can be sure the policies contained in the neighbourhood plan are right for this parish.”

Accepted forms of ID include a photocard driving licence, passport, concessionary travel pass, or blue badge.

Expired photo ID is acceptable provided it still bears a good likeness of the holder.

Only original versions of the ID, not copies, will be accepted.

For a comprehensive list of accepted identification, as well as more details about the new requirement and instructions on applying for free voter ID, residents can visit the Electoral Commission’s website.

The neighbourhood plan and related documents are available for viewing on the county council’s neighbourhood planning website.
