Inquest opens into death of man found in water by pumping station

An inquest was formally opened at Warrington Coroner’s Court on Wednesday into the death of Simon Cawthra.

The deceased, of Appleton, died aged 70 on November 2, near a pumping station off Weaver Lane in Frodsham.

His body was discovered by a member of the public in a body of water near the pumping station, with his identity confirmed by a detective sergeant from Cheshire Police.

A coroner officer requested that an inquest be opened due to the cause of death being ‘unnatural’.

They also requested that the inquest then be adjourned to allow for further work to be completed.

An internal coronial review was set for March 16, with a full inquest date set for May 22.

Victoria Davies, area coroner for Cheshire, said: “Given the circumstances and cause of death, this is unnatural.

“Therefore, I am going to open an inquest into the death of Simon Malcolm Cawthra and adjourn for further work to be completed.”
