Inverness residents have been sharing their woes of visiting Inverness Recycling Centre over the festive period.

Lengthy waits and big queues have led to people waiting over half an hour to get into the premises.

Local councillor, Duncan Macpherson said: “I’ve had constituents tell me that they’ve been queuing in lengthy queues with up to 41 cars in front of them at the Henderson Drive site on the Longman Industrial Estate.

“It’s always good to see people recycling their household waste items, especially after the busy Christmas festive season, however maybe the council need to look at lengthening the opening hours to suit the needs of the public after Christmas time.”

Inverness resident, George Fletcher, also got in touch with the Inverness Courier about this experience.

He said that the size of the centre, is just not big enough for Inverness.

“I have to go around twice a month and around Christmas there is a bit more waste.

“I went once in-between Christmas and new year and it took about 40 minutes, which is a long time to take out of your day.

“It’s the same every time I’m there. I don’t understand why there is such a small centre, for such a big area. Just one for Inverness doesn’t seem to be enough.

“It was bad before but it seems to have got worse since the new bin system was put in place.”

Other Inverness residents have also encountered similar problems, but insist that the staff at the centre are great.

Many residents across Inverness also faced problems with collection over the festive period — despite stickers on being put on bins saying that they would be collected.

Donald MacLeod said: “Maybe if they collected our rubbish as they said it wouldn’t have happened. Why spend money on bin stickers that mean nothing.”

Sara Ramsey added: “Also no bin collection of either paper and card or food waste in the Culduthel area for over a week now. Not sure why the council asked us to put our bins out on the Saturday if they had no intention of collecting them.”

Alistair Bowie said: “It would be good to have an area where people can leave things that could be re-use by someone else.

“An area for recycling packaging, I was down there over festive period and it was going to landfill, I’m sure a local company would like bubble wrap and ploy chips.

“The team down there do very well but need help to put new ideas in place.”

Highland Council has been contacted for comment.
