Landlord looks for tenant willing to move into posh flat – but there’s big catch

A London landlord’s rental room has caused a stir after being posted on social media due to its long list of stringent rules – including a curfew that prevents any potential tenant from entering the property until 8.30pm.

The now-removed ad listed the room for a whopping £1,350 per month, with a sizeable deposit of £1,557. Located in the highly desirable Camden borough, the ridiculous listing was shared on Spareroom and made rounds on the r/london subreddit, under the sarcastic title: ‘The Joys of Renting in London.

The hopeful landlord described themselves as a “professional researcher and music teacher,” and boasted that the flat had views of the beautiful Hampstead Park – so far, so good.

But, anyone who has rented in London knows there’s always a catch – or three. I am looking for a quiet, clean, and friendly person to lodge here,” the ad read. It continued: “You will have use of the kitchen, bathroom and your bedroom. I work long hours from the living room so this area is not available for use.”

And thus began the list of near-impossible conditions for any prospective lodger. “This space would ideally suit someone working longish hours in the city during the week and leaving the city for the weekends,” the post went on.

“I am also teaching the violin here in the evenings from 4-8.30pm Mon – Thurs – it would be audible, so the room would suit someone who is not home until post 8.30pm”.

Forking out over a grand each month gets you a flat where you can’t even use the whole space, and it seems like the landlord would rather you weren’t there at all!

A Redditor quipped, “Ah cool, so I’m allowed to exist in my own room for three hours a day, five days a week? For only £1,350/m!? What a bargain!”

If your lifestyle means working past 8.30pm, skipping town on weekends, and a passion for the violin, this could’ve been the perfect spot for you – just mind the small print.

The landlord’s rules were clear: “no guests, no pets, no use of living space, no noise after 11pm.” It’ll take a miracle to find someone who fits the bill!
