Lorry driver taken to hospital after M5 crash near Droitwich

The incident, which saw an HGV hit the central reservation, happened just after 11am between junctions 5 and 6 in Rashwood in Droitwich.

The lorry driver, aged in his 60s, had to be extricated from his cab by firefighters before being taken to hospital.

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent an ambulance, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care Car to the scene after being alerted at 11.14am, while five crews from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service attended.

The fire service said two crews from Worcester and one each from Evesham, Bromsgrove and Droitwich Fire Stations – plus the incident command unit from Droitwich – were called at 11.47 to reports of a crash involving a large vehicle on the M5 southbound between junctions 5 and 6.

A fire service spokesperson said: “The incident involved one vehicle which was in collision with the central reservation and one male casualty in his 60s was medically trapped.

“The casualty was extricated from the HGV cab and handed over to the care of the ambulance service.”

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said of the incident: “Upon arrival we found a man who was the driver of the HGV. He was assessed and had sustained potentially serious injuries.

“He received treatment at the scene before being conveyed to Worcester Royal Hospital for further assessment.”

The emergency services had left the scene by 1.18pm.
