M1 shut near Watford after body found in undergrowth

The M1 motorway has been shut near Watford after a dead body was found in the undergrowth nearby.

Police were called to the scene between junctions five and six yesterday afternoon (Monday, January 13) at 3pm.

Officers attended and found the body of a man.

The cause of his death is currently “unexplained”, police said, and drivers faced long delays during yesterday’s rush hour.

The southbound side reopened at about 6.30pm, and the northbound side was reopened just after 10pm, though one of the three lanes still remains closed today (Tuesday, January 14).

Traffic is coping well despite this, traffic analyst service Inrix said.

A Hertfordshire Police spokesperson said: “Officers were contacted yesterday afternoon after the body of a man was found in undergrowth at the side of the M1 motorway between junctions 5 and 6.

“Officers are currently working to establish the circumstances of the man’s death, which are currently unexplained, and will remain in the area today.

“We thank motorists for their patience whilst we dealt with this incident.”
