Drivers on the M5 this morning (January 15) are facing huge delays of up to 70 minutes after a crash and a vehicle fire left the motorway blocked for around an hour. The motorway has reopened but two lanes remain closed and there are several miles of standstill traffic. We will keep you updated with the latest information.
A multi-vehicle collision was reported to Avon and Somerset Police at around 6am, involving four vehicles, and causing all traffic to be temporarily held on the northbound carriageway. The crash also resulted in a small vehicle fire, that was quickly extinguished by firefighters.
Police said that nobody is believed to have sustained serious injuries in the crash. However, as of 8am this morning, two lanes remain closed on the M5 northbound carriageway, and the exit slip road at Junction 17 for Cribbs Causeway is also closed.
This has led to traffic queuing all the way back from Cribbs Causeway to Tickenham, near Clevedon, with traffic monitoring site, Inrix, reporting delays of 70 minutes, while National Highways traffic maps show standstill traffic in the area.
