A pedestrian has died following a horrific lorry crash on the M6.
Emergency services, including an air ambulance, rushed to the scene after reports of the major collision on the northbound carriageway shortly after 3pm on Sunday (January 12). Police and paramedics closed off the motorway for more than seven hours between J27 (Standish) and J28 (Leyland).
The southbound carriageway was also closed for the paramedic helicopter to land at the scene. The stretch of motorway was shut until around 10.30pm amid investigations into the crash.
It’s understood that police were conducting enquiries to determine if other vehicles were involved. The tragic incident caused over 60 minute queues on Sunday evening, before diversions were put in place and motorists were released from the closure.
Further details about the incident have not yet been confirmed by police.
Lancashire Police said in a statement: “The M6 is currently closed northbound between junction 27 (Standish) and Junction 28 (Leyland) because of a serious collision. The motorway will be closed for a significant amount of time and we would ask that people find alternate routes.
“We appreciate this will cause significant disruption and we will do everything in our power to re-open the motorway as soon as possible. The collision happened just after 3pm on the northbound carriageway.
“Anyone with information or dashcam footage is asked to call 101, quoting log 0638 of 12th January 2025.”
