Maidenhead woman banned from keeping dogs for ten years

Chantelle Baptiste, of Wyeth Close in Taplow, Maidenhead, admitted to the animal welfare offence after an RSPCA investigation.

The police, alongside RSPCA inspectors, executed a warrant at her home address following concerns about the welfare of her dog, Haze.

The dog was discovered with cropped ears.

Images found on mobile phones showed that the illegal procedure had been carried out while Haze was under Baptiste’s care.

RSPCA inspector Prisca Giddens, who investigated the case, said: “Ear cropping is a painful and illegal procedure that carries no benefit at all to the dogs.

“We hope this case sends a strong message to anyone involved with ear cropping that this will not be tolerated.”

Despite Baptiste’s remorse and acceptance of full responsibility, Reading Magistrates’ Court handed down a ten-year disqualification from keeping dogs.

She is not allowed to appeal this decision for the first five years.

In addition, she was sentenced to 200 hours of unpaid work.

She must also pay a £200 fine at a rate of £20 per month starting from December 6, 2024.

The court heard that the offence took place between January 20, 2023, and February 6, 2023, in the vicinity of Maidenhead.

Baptiste had allowed another person to carry out the prohibited procedure of ear cropping on Haze, contrary to Section 5(2) of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

The court ruled that she had permitted the act or failed to take reasonable steps to prevent it from happening.

The RSPCA hopes that this case will serve as a deterrent to others considering similar actions.

The charity continues to campaign against ear cropping, which it describes as a painful and unnecessary procedure that serves no benefit to dogs.
