Man, 90, dies after High West Street Gateshead crash

Peter Douglas, 90, of Gateshead, sustained life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a car whilst walking along High West Street after 11pm on December 23.

It was reported that a black BMW 525d had been travelling westbound on High West Street, near the Regent Street junction, when – for reasons yet to be established – it struck Peter.

Emergency services attended the scene and rushed Mr Douglas to hospital but he tragically passed away on January 8.

His family are being supported by specially-trained officers.

The driver of the BMW remained at the scene to assist officers with their enquiries.

Immediately after the collision, an investigation was launched into the incident, and now officers have appealed for more witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Andrew McNally, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are firmly with the family and loved ones of Mr Douglas at what must be an extremely difficult time for them.

“Our investigation into the circumstances around the collision remains very much ongoing and we continue to appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time to contact us.
