North Yorkshire Police have not been able to identify the man, who has been described as white and in his early 50s to 60s.

He had light brown short hair and stubble, according to the force.

The man was also pulled from the water wearing brown walking boots, blue denim jeans, a multicoloured knitted jumper and possibly a dark green waterproof coat.

North Yorkshire Police said: “Despite extensive enquiries, including with our colleagues in Humberside and West Yorkshire Police, we have been unable to identify him.

“He was found without any identification or personal belongings.”

It comes as a major incident was declared this afternoon after dozens of schoolchildren were among 100 people rescued from floodwaters.

Around 50 students became trapped at Edenham Primary School, near Bourne, in Lincolnshire, today after heavy snow thawing sparked flooding.

A major incident was declared by the Lincolnshire Resilience Forum, which said in a statement on X: “We expect to see conditions worsen overnight as surface water ices over and conditions on both treated and untreated roads will be very icy and pose a risk.”

Elsewhere, dramatic footage released also showed a woman being pulled from the vehicle before an emergency alert was issued in Leicestershire and Rutland.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service says it’s received more than 200 calls since the morning, and has rescued 100 people so far.

It comes as Brits are battling travel chaos and school closures, with warnings in place for snow, ice and flooding across the UK.

Heavy snow over the weekend led to major disruption, including to flights from major airports, while cars were left stranded.

The Environment Agency has issued 173 flood warnings, meaning flooding is expected, and 315 alerts, meaning flooding is possible.

And National Resources Wales issued two flood warnings and 22 alerts.

The thawing snow, combined with heavy rain, means fresh hazards for the start of the new week in some areas.

The Met Office has also today issued a fresh yellow snow warning in southern England.

It’s in place from 9am to midnight on Wednesday, with as much as 10cm to fall on higher ground.

It comes after temperatures plummeted to -13C overnight.

The Met Office said on X this morning: “It was the UK’s coldest night of winter so far.

“The temperature fell to minus 13.3°C in Loch Glascarnoch, Scotland.”

Deputy chief forecaster Mike Silverstone said: “The low pressure that brought the snow and heavy rain in the south will move out to the east by Monday.

“This will allow a cold northerly flow to become established again for much of next week.

“This will bring further sleet, snow and hail showers to northern Scotland in particular, but possibly to some other areas, especially near western coasts, with a fair amount of dry and bright weather elsewhere.”

He added: “Temperatures will remain below average, with widespread frost and the threat of ice at times.

“Some areas, especially in the north, may struggle to get above freezing for several days.”
