Man in court over Wakefield prison attack on serial rapist Reynhard Sinaga

A man has appeared at crown court charged in connection with a prison attack on Britain’s most prolific rapist.

Jack McRae is accused of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm to Reynhard Sinaga at HMP Wakefield on 4 July 2023.

Sinaga was jailed in 2020 after being convicted of drugging and raping 48 men in Manchester, although police said at the time they believed his real number of victims was much higher.

Mr McRae, 32, did not enter a plea when he appeared at Leeds Crown Court via videolink from HMP Frankland on Thursday. The hearing was adjourned to allow him more time to instruct a legal team ahead of a possible trial this summer.

Judge Howard Crowson set a provisional trial date of 16 June.

In total, Mr McRae has been charged with five counts of actual bodily harm, two counts of attempted grievous bodily harm and one count of assault on an emergency worker.

The charges relate to incidents between May and August 2023.

Judge Crowson told Mr McRae he could be brought back to Leeds Crown Court again on 4 February for a pre-trial hearing alongside his co-defendant, Andrew Beadie.

Mr Beadie is due to appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on 21 January.
