Marcus Meade: Vigil for Redditch man shot on Christmas Eve

The heartbroken family of 39-year-old Marcus Meade are asking the community to turn out and support them as they remember the father-of-two and what he meant to his family and friends.

Marcus died on Christmas Eve after being shot in the chest at his home in Redditch.

He was tasered before being shot with ring doorbell footage capturing the horror unfolding after a stand-off with officers lasting more than five hours.

The candlelight vigil is set to be held at Fownhope Close in Winyates on Tuesday (January 21) from 6pm until 7pm.

The date is four weeks exactly since his death.

Campaign chair Bishop Dr Desmond Jaddoo MBE, who has been supporting the family, said: “This is an opportunity for the local community, friends of Marcus and importantly the family to come together in order to commemorate and demonstrate what Marcus meant to everyone.

“This is not the way anyone wanted to start of new year, however, we are here and we must do what is right as we would urge all parties to ensure that they cooperate with the IOPC investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Marcus.

“The family of Marcus trust that this will be an open and transparent investigation to provide the answers that the family require. It’s a simple one: Why is Marcus dead?”

Officers arrived at the address on Fownhope Close at 2pm on December 24 after concerns were raised for the safety of a man with a knife.

The dad-of-two was pronounced dead at the scene after being shot dead by armed officers at around 8pm.

He was alone in the property at the time and the police watchdog has since launched an investigation.

His devastated parents Anthony Meade and Deborah Clarke have since spoken of their heartache and are demanding to know why their son was shot.

Mum Deborah said: “I want to know what happened to my son, I want to know why they thought it was ok to do what they did to my son.

“I want answers and I want justice for my son.”

Anthony added: “Christmas is meant to be a time for loving, sharing and caring and to hear of 13 tactical explosions, a taser and a bullet being delivered into my son’s chest, makes it difficult for us as a family to celebrate Christmas ever again.

“I need to know why my baby boy is dead.”

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said officers involved had provided detailed accounts and that it was conducting a “lengthy investigation”.

IOPC Regional Director Derrick Campbell said: “Our thoughts and sympathies remain with Mr Meade’s family, and everyone affected by his death.

“We are working hard to piece together all the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident and we want to reassure the community that our investigation, which is still in its early stages, will be thorough and guided by the evidence we find.

“We are meeting with Mr Meade’s family to again offer our sincere condolences and to outline how our investigation will progress.”
