Snow and ice have caused havoc for the region since last weekend, when a rare amber warning was in put in place for heavy snowfall and icy conditions. The adverse weather conditions have continued to cause disruption to travel, including on the roads, train services and flights.
Several schools were closed yesterday (January 10) due to ‘unsafe’ ice following snowfall earlier this week. Temperatures plunged to below freezing last night with a minimum of -3°C.
According to the Met Office, the temperatures will remain low, with “freezing fog” lingering for some. The website said: “Freezing fog may linger all day for some, keeping it very cold locally. But the majority will see some crisp winter sunshine, albeit staying frosty well into the day. Maximum temperature 2 °C.”
The freezing fog and low cloud will slowly clear to sunny spells on Sunday. It will be windier on Monday, with spells of rain, heavy at times, turning lighter on Tuesday. It will then gradually turn milder, the Met Office said.
