Molly Malone’s Restaurant in Londonderry and Huxo Cafe in Lisburn announce closures

As Molly Malone’s in Derry made its final food service, a Lisburn cafe also said it made the ‘difficult decision’ to shut its doors

Molly Malone’s Restaurant, which is located on Northland Road and just held a New Year’s Eve celebration with live music, took to social media to share the news with customers.

The team said they “wished things could have turned out differently”, however they added their bar operation will remain open.

“It is with great sadness and regret that we announce today marked the final food service at Molly Malone’s Restaurant. Unfortunately, due to multiple factors, it has become unsustainable for the restaurant to continue operations in the current climate,” they said.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our dedicated staff and loyal customers for their support over the years. We truly wish things could have turned out differently.

“We will reach out to those who currently have a function reserved in due course to discuss options regarding their booking.

“Please note that Molly’s Offy and Bar will continue to operate as usual, and we look forward to welcoming you there. Thank you again for your continued support and understanding.”

Customers responded with condolences on social media, with one patron saying: “So so sorry to hear this thank you so much for all your service. We hope things turn around soon, until then thank again your staff, [they] were always wonderful to my family, God bless you all at this time”.

Another fan of the Derry eatery said: “Sad news to hear, always lovely food and service,” while someone else added: “This is so sad, the nicest food, best service, and best staff, a favourite to so many.”

The business apologised “for the lack of notice” to customers who had purchased gift vouchers for the restaurant.

“But in some circumstances this cannot be helped. Vouchers can still be redeemed in Molly Malones Bar or Off Licence,” it added.

Elsewhere, a popular eatery in Lisburn also told customers it had served food for the last time.

Huxo Cafe, which is located inside Bow Street Mall, said it made the decision to close its doors after “much consideration”.

“It is with a heavy heart that we regrettably announce the closure of Huxo from 6th January 2025. After much consideration, we have made the difficult decision to cease operations,” the team said on social media.

“We deeply apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and extend our heartfelt gratitude for your support over the years. To everyone who [has] walked through our doors, shared a meal, celebrated special moments, or just popped in for coffee – thank you.

“For customers who have purchased vouchers, we kindly ask that you send an image of your voucher to acc@huxo.cafe. We will work to address all concerns promptly.”

One customer wrote that they were sorry to see the place go: “We always enjoyed the food and atmosphere here. It was our local meet-up point with our uncles when we visit and before that I always enjoyed popping in for a coffee or bite to eat. Sorry to see you guys go.”

Another speculated it may be due to a “lack of footfall in Lisburn” adding they “were not surprised.”
