Moment driver ends up face down in snow as police use ‘stinger’ in chase

Rotherham police have released bodycam footage after a police chase involving a stinger resulted in a suspect laying face down in the snow.

South Yorkshire Police spotted a stolen Volkswagen Polo, believed to be using cloned plates, yesterday (Sunday, January 12) around 1.30pm. The force used a stinger to stop the car, and taser in hand, demanded the suspect to lie face down on the snow covered pavement.

The driver overtook cars on the wrong side of the road and reached speeds of more than 65mph. Hidden officers chucked a stiffer on Upper Wortley Road moments before the driver came racing through it.

The driver remained committed to evading police and continued as far as possible in the vehicle, before crashing into the fence of a property in a cul-de-sac. The driver fled the scene but was quickly arrested a few minutes later in Upper Wortley Road.

A man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and criminal damage. He has since been charged and will appeared before court today (January 13).

Temporary Roads Policing Inspector Brandon Brown said: “Those involved in criminality and who drive without insurance are more likely to take greater risks on our roads and must be brought to a stop. Throughout a pursuit, officers will constantly monitor the risk posed to the public and will work as a team to think of tactics and options to bring the pursuit safely to a stop.

“The use of a Hollow Spike Tyre Deflation device, known widely as a stinger, is a crucial piece of equipment for us and yesterday’s effort from officers was a great display of teamwork to apprehend a suspect intent on evading us, no matter the cost to anyone else.”
