The callous pair were captured on camera in their heavily damaged white van, which had a crumpled bonnet after the hit-and-run.
A hair-raising 999 call revealed Shaun lying about the vehicle being stolen after the duo abandoned it.
“There’s been a crash, with a stolen van and its my dad’s van that’s been stolen,” said Shaun.
“They think it was my dad that was driving it and we just need to clear his name basically.
“They’ve been looking for my dad, they’ve went to my nanna’s at 3 o’clock in the morning, then raided it.
“There’s been a crash earlier on tonight when the car was stolen, the van, someone’s been killed, I think.”
A trial heard Mr Darby, a 17-year-old boy, a 50-year-old woman and two other men had been walking home after enjoying a night out before the horror unfolded.
Moments later Shaun ploughed through them while riding a bike.
The thug pretended he was carrying a knife when they group started to protest.
The three men started to chase Shaun before he smashed into another pedestrian and fell off his bike.
He fled on foot while calling dad Martin, who was at home in Ingleby Barwick, for help.
Martin got in his van and picked up Shaun, before they found the group of pedestrians again.
They veered off the road, drove onto a grass verge, and then sped across a cycle lane, headed directly towards the friends.
Martin mowed them down on the footpath, and sent one victim flying through the air.
They fled the scene only to be spotted on CCTV with a smashed windscreen.
Martin and Shaun abandoned the van and fled back home to report it stolen.
Mr Darby was sadly pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of paramedics.
The woman suffered life-threatening injuries while the 17-year-old, and another man were seriously injured and required hospital treatment.
Today Martin, 57, appeared at Teesside Crown court and was jailed for life for Mr Darby’s murder.
He must serve at least 32 years.
Meanwhile son Shaun, 29, was sentenced to 16 years for manslaughter.
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Matt Hollingsworth, from Cleveland Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “It’s almost beyond comprehension that a chance encounter between a group of friends and Shaun Breeze would be the catalyst for such a senseless and callous attack.
“Martin and Shaun Breeze killed a well-known and well-liked man as well as injuring or trying to injure others in the group purely as an act of revenge.
“As we heard from the impact statements read out in court, this attack has had such a devastating impact on the victims, their family, and their friends.
“I know today’s sentencing will never bring Brian back or lessen the physical and psychological pain suffered by all those impacted by this attack; however I hope it begins to provide some form of closure to know the men responsible for this will be in prison for a very long time.
“My thoughts remain with them as they continue to come to terms with everything that has happened.”
