The UK Health Security Agency extended amber cold weather health alerts warning of a rise in deaths across England until Tuesday.

It will end the bitter cold snap after -18.9C in Scottish Highlands hamlet Altnaharra on Friday became the coldest January night for 15 years.

Predicting 12C up north and 9C down south, Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said: “It will be back to average temperatures generally for the time of year.”
