Plans have been unveiled for a new cycle lane in Bermondsey that would link two existing segregated cycleways divided by the mainline railway.
If Southwark Council approves it, the route would run north-south through Bermondsey, passing through Spa Gardens. It would connect Tanner Street (TfL Cycleway C14) with Willow Walk (TfL Cycleway 10).
Construction is estimated to cost £1.45 million, funded through developer contributions.
If all goes ahead, work on the cycle lane is set to begin this autumn.
The project would also formalise the current temporary cycling measures on Druid Street, adding a permanent footpath outside the railway arches.
The idea for a cycle route in this area stems from studies conducted in 2017. These studies aimed to provide an alternative for cyclists heading north from Cycleway 10 towards the City, avoiding busier main roads by directing them to Cycleway 14 instead.
In May 2022, the council introduced an Experimental Traffic Management Order, which included segregated two-way cycle lanes on Druid Street and a modal filter at Gedling Place to restrict motor traffic. After a public consultation and detailed design revisions, updates were made in November 2023 to address issues such as access to commercial units along Druid Street.
Southwark Council’s committee is expected to formally approve the project soon, with the recommendation considered a near certainty.
