New exhibition of iconic pop art prints coming to Worcester

Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum will host the exhibition, ‘General Dynamic F.U.N.’ from January 11 to March 30.

The display will feature a series of screen prints created between 1965 and 1970 by pop art pioneer Sir Eduardo Paolozzi, who was born in Scotland and died in 2005.

Paolozzi was credited with his ability to transform the everyday and the mass-produced into images full of energy and graphic complexity.

The artist’s kaleidoscopic print projects and mechanistic sculptures earned him a revered place in the pop art movement in the UK.

Made up of 50 screen prints and photolithographs, the series employs mass reproduction technologies and draws inspiration from familiar faces in consumer advertising, high fashion, and Hollywood.

The prints, which have titles like Totems and Taboos of the Nine-to-Five Day and Cary Grant as a Male War Bride, can be viewed in any order, which promoters say reflect the fragmented visual stimuli of modern life.

The exhibition also offers a unique perspective on the interplay of creativity and consumer culture.

The prints were described by J.G. Ballard, Paolozzi’s friend and occasional collaborator, as a “unique guidebook to the electric garden of our minds”.

Visitors should note that due to ongoing lift upgrade work, there will be no lift access to the first floor.

This upgrade is part of a three-year plan to improve facilities for visitors.
