All the businesses and attractions closed due to snow:

Beamish Museum

The popular tourist attraction announced on Sunday: “It’s with a heavy heart that, due to the snowy conditions, we are unable to open the museum today (Sunday, 5th January 2025).

“We’re saddened to have to make this decision but the safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers must always come first, and due to the weather conditions it just wouldn’t be possible to open.

“For anyone with a booking for our pantomime performances today, we’ll be sending you an email with further information.

“Thank you everyone for your understanding.”

The North East is facing significant disruption due to heavy snowfall, with severe weather warnings in place across the region.

As snow continues to blanket the area, rural communities are among the hardest hit, with reports of treacherous road conditions and some residents becoming isolated.

Snow depths of up to 40cm are expected in higher altitudes above 300 meters, particularly in areas such as the Pennines and parts of Northumberland.

Transport networks are struggling to cope with the challenging conditions. The A1 has seen delays and closures in some stretches due to ice and snow accumulation, while other rural roads remain impassable.

Public transport services, including buses and trains, have also been affected, with cancellations and delays reported on several key routes. Travelers are urged to check for updates before setting out.

Power outages have also added to the disruption, with thousands of homes in County Durham and Teesside experiencing temporary blackouts.
