Number of parking fines given out in North Ayrshire revealed

A freedom of information request submitted to the local authority has revealed that wardens have given out penalty charge notices to 5,689 motorists since decriminalised parking enforcement (DPE) was launched in the area.

This power was first handed over to the council in November 2023 though was not officially implemented until April 15 last year.

Between then and November, the period covered within statistics, North Ayrshire Council has accumulated £228,500 from penalty charge notice tickets.

A vast majority of fines – 3,964 – have been paid within two weeks of issue, allowing motorists to pay a reduced charge of £50.

A further 303 road users have paid the full price of their fine – £100.

However, not all matters have been resolved at this time with 464 incidents now having been referred to sheriffs for debt recovery.

Pavement parking has been the most common offence committed across the county – with a total of 1,374 accounting for nearly a quarter of all fines handed out.

Other common charges have arisen from cars being stopped in ‘no waiting’ areas 900 times, 411 road users parked for longer than the permitted time and 403 vehicles parked without a valid pay and display ticket.

The locations where offences were committed most often were detailed to be the car parks in West Road and High Street in Irvine and Main Street in Largs.
