Nurse neglected residents at Maypole Care Home in Hedge End

Gillian Lacey, who worked at the Bupa-run Maypole Care Home in Hedge End, has been struck-off from the profession by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

It follows a misconduct hearing at which she was found guilty of failing to call an ambulance for a patient who needed one.

She also failed to carry out observations and administered a thyroid hormone without consulting the resident’s medication chart, resulting in them receiving a double dose of the drug.

But Ms Lacey was cleared of several other allegations that had been made against her.

These included failing to conduct a clinical assessment and making “unprofessional” comments such as: “It doesn’t matter, they will be dead soon,” and: “They are dying so it makes no difference”.

The NMC, the independent regulator for nurses in England, has published a 49-page report outlining the evidence submitted to the hearing and the panel’s findings.

The report said: “The panel was of the view that Ms Lacey’s actions did fall significantly short of the standards expected of a registered nurse.

“The charges found proved, individually and cumulatively, amounted to misconduct.

“Ms Lacey did not provide vulnerable patients with the expected level of care, incorrectly administered medication, and demonstrated deep-seated attitudinal concerns towards patients under her care.

“Nurses occupy a position of privilege and trust in society and are expected at all times to be professional.

“Patients and their families must be able to trust nurses with their lives and the lives of their loved ones. To justify that trust, they must make sure their conduct justifies both their patients’ and the public’s trust in the profession.”

The report said the panel agreed that Ms Lacey should be struck off after ruling out alternative sanctions.

“Allegations involving neglect of vulnerable people will always be treated seriously. Such behaviour can have a particularly severe impact on public confidence and the safety of those who use services.”

The report said the nurse’s misconduct amounted to a “significant departure” from the standards expected of a registered nurse.

“The findings in this particular case demonstrate that Ms Lacey’s actions were serious and to allow her to continue practising would undermine public confidence in the profession and in the NMC.

Ms Lacey, who did not attend the hearing, worked at the care home in 2021 and 2022.

The 68-bed facility was rated “Good” following an inspection carried out in 2023 by the Care Quality Commission, which regulates the health sector.
