‘Permanent’ barrier for Eston sinkhole at old mining works

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council have warned the public to keep staying away from the hole as investigations continue.

They are still consulting experts about the origin of the hole but it is believed to be in the same location as an old borehole from mining works.

The previous fencing which had been put in place by the council was removed in an act of anti-social behaviour. Further attempts to secure the site have also been impacted by anti-social acts.

More “permanent” and “robust” fencing will be put in place.

A Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council spokesperson said: “For your own safety, please continue to avoid the area on Eston Recreation Ground where a sinkhole has appeared.

“We are in consultation with experts, including geologists, to determine the cause of the hole and to look at how we can make the area safe again. A full survey of the area will be carried out, but we believe the sinkhole has formed at the same location as a borehole from the old mining works. We will keep the public informed as and when we know more.

“Pedestrian barriers and Heras fencing were previously removed by persons unknown from the area and other attempts to secure the site have been affected by anti-social behaviour. Therefore, a more permanent robust perimeter fence is to be installed to form a compound area.

“This compound area will incorporate the sinkhole and additional area around the perimeter of the sinkhole to accommodate any potential further subsidence. Regular inspections of this compound will ensure it is maintained and restricts the public gaining access. We will continue to carefully monitor the situation and update accordingly.
