Emergency services were called to Sunderland Greyhound Stadium on Newcastle Road at around 12.20pm on Sunday (January 5) to reports of a medical incident.
Police, ambulance and the air ambulance all attended the scene – with paramedics treating a patient at the scene, with police confirming that the person died.
“Despite the efforts of staff in attendance, the person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene a short time later,” a spokesperson for Northumbria Police said.
“There is not believed to be any third-party involvement in the person’s death and a report will be prepared for the coroner.”
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 12.18pm on Sunday 5 January to reports of a medical incident at the Regal Sunderland Greyhound Stadium on Newcastle Road in Sunderland.

“We dispatched two ambulance crews, a duty officer, and requested support from our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).”
A spokesperson for the Great North Air Ambulance added: “On Sunday our critical care team was activated at 12.30pm to reports of a medical incident at Sunderland Greyhound Stadium.
“We had two paramedics and a doctor on board our aircraft and they arrived on scene at 12.46pm.
“Our team worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service to assess and treat a patient.”
