Plans for self-builds in Suckley in Malvern Hills

The proposal is for nine homes plus landscaping including “green infrastructure” on land next to Stocks Farm in Suckley.

An application submitted to Malvern Hills District Council said the site is allocated for housing in “the emerging local plan” and is suitable for up to 18 dwellings.

The plans said Suckley also has a proposed category 1 village status, meaning it is considered among the most sustainable of villages for development.

“The proposal will provide an opportunity to offer a high-quality, eco-friendly and carbon neutral highly sustainable design with architectural merit to reflect local character and represent local distinctiveness,” says planning agent The Rural Planning Co.

“There is an opportunity to provide enhanced green infrastructure and biodiversity and incorporate renewable energy into the scheme which will also ensure that the proposal leaves a long-term legacy for the village.”

The developer has consulted with villagers and with Suckley Parish Council, making draft site plans available for people to see at a meeting in September 2023.

“The site is situated to the south of the southern division of Suckley village, opposite the junction between the two roads serving the village and known as Stocks Cross,” plans state.

“Stocks Farm lies to the south of the land on the opposite side of the road which consists of the main farmhouse and a number of converted and agricultural buildings.”

A couple of neighbours have commented on the plans.

Linda Connor said: “No more buildings please, this is a lovely rural area, we need to keep our green spaces for the sake of the environment and for our mental and physical health.

“There is too much building going on in our villages, Powick is one for example.”

Rebecca Southall raised concerns around a tall building that could overlook her garden and stormwater run-off, but said the proposals are “appropriate in terms of the space available and the number of properties proposed”.
